Hulk, the 2003 adaptation of Marvel Comics’ iconic green-skinned monster, remains one of the more intriguing films in director Ang Lee’s stacked oeuvre. The film spreads itself too thin both in terms of narrative and aesthetics, but is fascinating for its glimmers of character depth and exciting experimentation with the cinematic form. While many of the film’s ideas fall flat (as when Lee forcefully recalls the adjacent panels of a comic during some of the film’s transitions), there’s enough invention to warrant revisiting this tortured but exceptional comic-book movie. Hulk screens at the Film Society at Lincoln Center’s retrospective of Lee’s films.
