Their 1959 hit “Shout” has become a staple of proms and weddings across the land, but The Isley Brothers are so much more than an enabler to drunken boogies. Almost perpetually active since the mid-1960s, the siblings have consistently proven their ongoing relevance, even collaborating with R. Kelly on one of his infamous hip-hopera ballads in 2001. The Isley Brothers began their career in their youth by singing in gospel choirs, but quickly crossed over to mainstream success by adopting and adapting ongoing trends like ’50s doo-wop, ’60s soul, ’70s funk, and ’80s contemporary R&B. Today the Brothers remain the only group to have ever charted on Billboard’s “Hot 100” in six consecutive decades, a testament to the band’s ability to stay afloat amidst popular music’s everlasting sea changes.
