Jenny And Johnny, Love As Laughter, and Jaill at Lincoln Hall
When two musicians date, they inevitably end up recording together, putting their romance into a musical time capsule—and pressure cooker—with varying long-term results. With this fall’s preciously poppy I’m Having Fun Now, the prospects look good for Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis and singer-songwriter Johnathan Rice sticking together. If they’re as sweet to each other as they sound on their songs, these two crazy kids might just stand a chance. Milwaukee’s Jaill also has a pretty good shot at longevity, judging by its stellar Sub Pop debut, That’s How We Burn. Tightening up the casual, stoner-guy approach taken on previous releases, the band’s built a solid foundation of sinewy hooks and mile-a-minute bons mots. The record’s a testament to the years frontman Vinnie Kircher spent in his bedroom crafting clever pop songs that never found an audience.
