As The Flatlanders’ Joe Ely tells it, the Lubbock trio accidentally invented alt-country thanks to the individual contributions of its three members. The little bit rock ’n’ roll to Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s country expert and Butch Hancock’s wandering folk troubadour, Ely’s honky-tonkin’ rock made him a friend in The Clash’s Joe Strummer following The Flatlanders’ breakup. More than 30 years since he sang background vocals on “Should I Stay Or Should I Go,” Ely remains a consummate “songwriter’s songwriter,” having performed with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Lyle Lovett, and Uncle Tupelo. His latest, 2011’s Satisfied At Last, is his first since 2007’s Silver City, but Ely’s real draw is his whiskey-soaked intensity he brings to solo shows and performances with the reunited Flatlanders.
