Johnny Flynn and Owen at Mayne Stage

Like his pals in Mumford And Sons, Johnny Flynn is a whirlwind of Brit-folk whimsy and foot-stomping. His latest record, Been Listening, is charmingly literary, from the delicately funky opener, “Kentucky Pill,” to the horn-tinged closer, “The Prizefighter and the Heiress.” Flynn duets with singer-songwriter Laura Marling on “The Water,” a modern day murder ballad done with absolute heartbreaking precision. Opener Mike Kinsella once fronted the tender but short-lived Urbana band American Football, crafting vulnerable but not spineless emo-rock that some could argue served as the template for Death Cab For Cutie, were it not for both bands forming in 1997. Since the dissolving of AF, Kinsella has been fronting the similarly mellow Owen, whose fifth album, 2009’s New Leaves, meditates on fatherhood and the acceptance of change.
