As a founding member of the Mekons, artist, and even the inspiration and songwriter behind the musical play All The Fame Of Lofty Deeds, Jon Langford is nothing less than a renaissance man. On the new Old Devils, he’s once again blending punk, folk, and country, infusing them all with his wry Welsh wit. Langford’s not getting any younger, a fact he’s keenly aware of on songs like “Getting Used To Uselessness” and “Book Of Your Life,” and that becomes an overriding theme on the record. Still, he rocks as hard as ever, and live—with fellow Waco Brothers Alan Doughty and Joe Camarillo forming part of Skull Orchard—it’s a joyous sight to behold.
