For years, Paul Banks was the sledgehammer-like singer and guitarist for Interpol, but he spent 2009 putting out a solo effort under the pseudonym Julian Plenti. The album Julian Plenti Is… Skyscraper, which came out in August, isn't much of a stylistic departure: Throw in some muddling vocal effects, and the songs are indistinguishable from Interpol's wussier selections, meandering around a throbbing throughline without actually heading anywhere. Banks shows he has a knack for thinking outside the standard foursome—piercing violins and supporting synthetic horns dot a few numbers—but it's a mystery why he doesn't just go for it already.
