Wu-Tang associate Killah Priest made his name on GZA’s seminal Liquid Swords before stepping out on his own with 1998’s Heavy Mental. In the 10-plus years since, the mumble-mouthed MC has released six LPs filled with hard-knocks commentary offset by religious allegory, including last year’s Behind The Stained Glass, a decidedly Wu-free album that gets remarkably confessional about Priest’s parting ways with former producer RZA, and finds him reflecting candidly on the way his career has fallen off since turning independent. While the album can sometimes be hampered by mediocre beats, few MCs traffic in the sort of rich imagery and deep lyrical abstracts that Priest so carefully employs.
