Ladysmith Black Mambazo at Old Town School of Folk Music - Maurer Hall
South African band Ladysmith Black Mambazo made its name with ever-inspiring melodies and expansive vocal harmonies, a shifting, multi-voice choral style known as isicathamiya. Introduced to most Americans via Paul Simon’s 1986 album Graceland, the group has been around and active since the ’70s, releasing over 50 studio recordings, including 2011’s Songs From A Zulu Farm. And no less an authority than Nelson Mandela praised the group’s role in the fall of apartheid, claiming that Mambazo helped disarm oppressors through the beauty of its melodies while delivering revolutionary messages of hope and unity (sung in Zulu) to those oppressed.
