You’d think a quirky, Swedish, electronic soul quartet would catch the ear of American listeners, especially when said quartet is fronted by a fetching Japanese woman. But in 2007, the praises of Little Dragon’s eponymous debut went shamefully unsung on this continent. (Maybe it was the unsettling cover art—a grotesque-looking child with giant eyes.) With a colorful palette of acoustic instruments and synths, that album boasted a no-nonsense (but not quite minimalist) approach to pop songwriting and jazzy, melancholic vocals from Yukimi Nagano. It’s a winning formula, and with luck, the outfit’s next album, slated for release this year, will help it blow up. If you’re into those “I saw them before they were big” moments, you’d better catch this show.
