Lollapalooza: Yeah Yeah Yeahs + Tool, Animal Collective, Chairlift, Los Campesinos!, Chairlift, Atmosphere at Grant Park
When Tool first broke out with 1993's Undertow, it was seen as a lifeline for intelligent heavy metal, which had been more or less marginalized by grunge. That makes it more than a little notable that the band is one of Lollapalooza's Saturday-night headliners. (The other is the quintessentially spastic Yeah Yeah Yeahs.) Just as head-turning earlier in the day are off-the-rails power-pop band Los Campesinos!, noise-pop outfit Animal Collective (in both a DJ and live-band set), the moody Chairlift, and Minnesota indie-rap duo Atmosphere, whose sympathetic tales about the downtrodden will likely take on a more defiant attitude than usual at the festival.
