A quintet that first found its home within the jam scene, Lotus has evolved into an electronic group whose hybrid sound (a mix of jam-rock, electronica, funk, jazz, trance, and drum-and-bass) defies most categorization. Lotus transcends the darker beats typical of its native Philadelphia (see: Disco Biscuits, lots of psy-trance) to emit a more inviting sound infused with funky medleys and worldly beats. On last year's Hammerstrike, Lotus keeps up the free-form grooving, dipping a bit into indie-pop and post-rock sounds amid the sleek syncopation, a habit that gets further rumination on this year's Oil On Glass/Feather On Wood.
