Chicago's Lovehammers (formerly Marty Casey And Lovehammers) know how to go easy on certain elements that people cringingly brace for when confronted with radio-friendly hard rock, at least as it's existed since 2000 or so. Lead singer and guitarist Marty Casey almost sounds as if he's never heard of Chad Kroeger, instead choosing to enunciate his words and lend a sense of power-pop and hair-metal fun to the band's predictable, but certainly not miserably predictable, songs. Casey owes part of his success to vying for INXS' lead-singer position on the reality show Rock Star: INXS—he came in second—but Lovehammers as a whole deserve credit for keeping their heads above the waves of moany-groany-dude sauce that seem to drown so many of their contemporaries.
