When you name your band after the legend Ma Barker and her sons, chances are you’re going to be pretty hardcore. Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster are certainly hardcore in most every sense of the word, but they also mix in enough Southern rock to be a little more interesting than the average hardcore band. Former Underoath vocalist Dallas Taylor leads the Sons with a gruff, but melodic, screaming style and lyrics about the South, murder, and various other forms of mayhem. 2009’s III features acoustic slide guitar, harmonica, and banjo among its crushing guitars and thunderous drums, giving the band a distinct sound somewhere between roots music and heavy metal. The superficial likeness to Zeppelin continues with the band’s new, fourth album, titled, of course, IV.
