Meshell Ndegeocello and Deep Blue Field at Old Town School of Folk Music - Maurer Hall
Meshell Ndegeocello has spent much of her career on the margins of mainstream. Her soulful croon and funk-infused R&B has garnered her heaps of critical praise and a number of Grammy nominations (no wins yet, unfortunately), and yet Ndegeocello remains a musician’s musician, collaborating with the likes of Madonna, John Mellencamp, Herbie Hancock, and Alanis Morissette, among others. Ndegeocello recently released her eighth studio album, Devil’s Halo, which she wrote with a four-piece band. The record is short, emulating a live experience, and is full of thumping (and, yes, funky) basslines and heartbreaker/heartbroken lyrics that are patently Ndegeocello.
