Since returning from a post-Soul Coughing sabbatical, Mike Doughty has focused on creating a more positive, polished, and mainstream take on his previous band’s poetry-slam/hip-hop aesthetic, signing with Dave Matthews’ record label and working with producer Dan Wilson of Semisonic for Haughty Melodic and 2008’s Golden Delicious. The latter—neither golden nor particularly delicious—has little of the spark that animates Doughty’s best work, but the live show is a better prospect: Doughty’s still a personable performer, and he knows how to work an audience.
