Mister Rogers & Me at Gene Siskel Film Center
While PBS’ Fred Rogers is a staple in a great number of Americans’ lasting memories from childhood, not a lot of people know all that much about the man in the cardigan. During a stint at MTV, filmmaker Benjamin Wagner discovered Rogers, the cardinal of kindness, lived next door to him. Rogers died soon after, but not before he’d inspired Wagner to make a documentary around his life and legacy. Mister Rogers And Me captures people like the late Tim Russert raving about the TV star, saying everything short of proclaiming him the second coming of Christ. It’s a sympathetic tale and not one that’s all that surprising, but like Rogers himself, it’s warm and comforting, so what’s the harm in that?
