The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle hasn’t been gifted with a great voice or a particularly notable ear for melody; Darnielle’s strength is words. After delving (uncomfortably, at times) into his personal issues with love and loss on 2005’s The Sunset Tree and 2006’s Get Lonely, Darnielle sounds looser and funnier on 2008’s Heretic Pride, though the gap between his quotable lyrics and anemic music is wider than ever. The Life Of The World To Come, the band's recent effort (its 17th), is back to the personal, heavily exploring religious themes. Final Fantasy is string-plucking whiz kid Owen Pallett, whose loopy violin tunes sound like mini concertos, interrupted occasionally by Pallett's striking, piercing voice. Expect to hear some tracks from Heartland, due out in January.
