Mr. Hulot's Holiday (Les Vacances De Monsieur Hulot) at Gene Siskel Film Center

The Film Center’s series on Jacques Tati kicks off with Mr. Hulot’s Holiday, the introduction to his long-running Hulot character, a gentle Buster Keaton type whose attempts to do even the simplest activities—a short drive, a job interview—have the potential to fumble into near-disaster. But Tati's alter ego is an enormously sympathetic character who's out of place in most surroundings, and he’s treated as more than a simple klutz. Invested with a rumpled, good-hearted nobility, Hulot embarks on various misadventures while staying at a beachside resort; it isn’t long before he draws the hostility of other patrons. (Also Feb. 10, 6pm)
