Mulholland Dr. at Gene Siskel Film Center

David Lynch originally conceived of Mulholland Dr. as a two-hour television pilot a full decade after the spectacular rise and fall of his landmark television series Twin Peaks. When television executives roundly rejected it, Lynch added a conclusion to the previously open-ended story. Naomi Watts plays Betty Wells, an aspiring actress new to Hollywood, who meets an amnesiac living in her aunt’s apartment. An aggressively unconventional narrative, there is no way to encapsulate a film where plot takes a backseat to mood and tone. With Lynch’s trademark surreal elements and seemingly impenetrable meaning, it inspired incredibly divisive critical opinions, just like the rest of his work. Still, it did receive several accolades. Lynch won Best Director at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival to go along with his Palm d’Or win for Wild At Heart a decade earlier.
