Mustard Plug, Flatfoot 56, Cheap Girls, and Rule 22 at Bottom Lounge
There's no shame in liking ska. It doesn't matter if most of the genre's fans happen to be high-schoolers wearing plaid hats. Mustard Plug's upbeat, horn-riddled infusion of Jamaican ska with American influences like jazz and punk doesn't get as much respect as it probably should, but that hasn't stopped the Grand Rapids sextet: It recently put out a DVD entitled Never Get Out Of The Van: The Story Of Mustard Plug and a vinyl reissue of its 1993 album Big Daddy Multitude. These releases follow 2007's In Black And White, which finds the group in an infectiously upbeat but defiant mood, from the sneering opener "Who Benefits?" to the last note on "What You Say."
