For going on three albums now, The National has lurked on the cusp of big things, but this year's High Violet seems to push the Brooklyn band as close to the precipice as possible. The much anticipated follow-up to 2007's critically acclaimed Boxer is another masterful study in atmosphere. The famously contentious band endured another tumultuous writing process for High Violet, but the strain produced a shoo-in for 2010's best-of lists. The Antlers hit those lists in 2009 with their concept record Hospice. Told through the dark lens of losing a loved one to cancer, the narrative Peter Silberman and company crafted deals with obsession, grief, psychological abuse, and ghosts, and does so in such raw, broken detail that it can be a tough listen.
