New Cult Canon: Wet Hot American Summer + David Wain at Music Box Theatre

Wet Hot American Summer is a rare and wonderful enterprise in this age of box office gluttony: a spoof that doesn’t concern itself with yesterday’s hits, but rather a sub-sub-genre of camp-set comedies from the late ’70s to mid-’80s that includes Meatballs, the TV movie Poison Ivy, SpaceCamp, and the non-gory scenes of Friday The 13th and Sleepaway Camp. Add on to that the delicious absurdity of a 2001 movie from members of the comedy troupe The State pitched specifically to Reagan-era latchkey kids who have a certain generalized love for the fashions, hairstyles, music, and other minutiae and that’s what makes it a perfect choice for the latest installment of The A.V. Club’s New Cult Canon series, and why we’re so damned happy to have writer/director David Wain in town for this event to help present the film.
