Not unlike the R&B revivalists of New York’s Daptone crew, Leeds’ The New Mastersounds like to play their funk both ways: cool and dapper on one side, sweaty and prone to getting up off of things on the other. Formed in 1999, the instrumental four-piece sounds pretty sharp regardless of what mood you’re in (as long as said mood is funky, of course). The simple drums-bass-guitar-keys lineup makes for a crisp, no-bullshit sound, one the band doesn’t fiddle with much on albums like 2008’s Plug & Play or on 2009’s Ten Years On. Openers Lubriphonic are a sextet of some of the city’s finest blues sidesmen and have churned and burned through over 150 shows this year alone on the back of their latest record, The Gig Is On.
