Industrial pioneers Nitzer Ebb never quite broke through to mainstream success, but with a solid back catalogue of punk- and goth-influenced techno, their imprint on '90s electronic and heavy metal music is undeniable. Formed in Essex, England, as an entirely electronic project utilizing keyboards, synthesizers, and electronic drums, Nitzer Ebb kept an aggressive and hard-edged approach on their early material. After a tour with Depeche Mode in the late '80s, singer Douglas McCarthy and drummer Bon Harris began writing more pop-influenced songs, while maintaining the dark-but-danceable sound they'd established. The resulting albums, That Total Age and Ebbhead, were successful among alternative-music fans and college radio DJs, but the band quietly faded into obscurity. Ebb's eventual reunion and world tour in 2006 was followed by the comprehensive CD/DVD retrospective Body Of Work.
