Pelican is a metal band—that’s the easy way of saying it. But really the Chicago-bred act has always existed somewhere between genres, its expansive, thundering instrumentals much too metal for the post-rock set, its melodic riffage much too emotive for diehard metalheads. It’s a good dichotomy for the band, though, and has given room for growth over the act’s nearly decade-long existence. A recent move from Hydra Head to Southern Lord has pushed Pelican into darker and even moodier territories; its latest, What We All Come To Need (to be released this month), boasts guest spots from the likes of Greg Anderson of SUNNO))) and there’s even been some rumored studio sessions with Earth’s Dylan Carlson.
