Pickpocket at Gene Siskel Film Center
As obsessive and detail-oriented as any director in history, French master Robert Bresson found the ideal subject matter in 1959’s influential Pickpocket, which reveals the artistry behind criminal sleight-of-hand. Martin LaSalle stars as a man who gets arrested for picking pockets almost as soon as he starts doing it, but finds that he can’t give up the habit so easily. After some tutelage by an expert, LaSalle goes back to his risky business, which Bresson suggests is a form of expression as much as an attempt to make a living.
