Deep down, Radar Eyes are a pop band. While they do play at the more ethereal edges of post-punk and shoegaze, pop is at the core, which is good, because they’re good at it. Shambling drums, lazy guitars, and a stubborn, probing bass are the formula for most of Radar Eyes’ songs, all of which are coated in a nostalgic, reverberated haze. The band’s use of synthesizer in some songs is unique and suggests a step beyond the garage and into the realm of psychedelia and even new wave. This ramshackle, lo-fi aesthetic caught the ear of Chicago’s premier purveyor of all things ramshackle and lo-fi, HoZac, which will release the group’s self-titled debut this month.
