Raphael Saadiq really, really appreciates classic soul music from the ’60s and ’70s. With his 2008 album The Way I See It, the former lead singer of ’90s hitmakers Tony! Toni! Toné! created a traditional Northern soul record that moved away from the high-sheen sound of radio-friendly R&B. Such are Saadiq’s roots, both with his old group and production work for everyone from Mary J. Blige to Ludacris to Joss Stone. No matter the motivation, though, there’s no questioning Saadiq’s consummate skill and ear for tunes that would do well by artists like Al Green and Sam Cooke.
