None Rebirth Brass Band and Mas Trueno at Martyrs'
As New Orleans continues its impossibly slow reconstruction, many of its resident musicians carry on where they truly live: on the road. That’s where Nawlins funk-jazz-rock nine-piece Rebirth Brass Band usually is, which helps explain the band’s popularity over the past 25 years. The group has spawned a documentary that analyzes its context in the New Orleans jazz-funeral tradition (2000’s Let Me Do My Thang: Rebirth Brass Band), but it’s better known for its hypnotic music and intoxicating live shows, even if it only occasionally releases albums of original music. The band plays here behind last year’s 25th-anniversary retrospective, aptly titled 25, part of a full slate of road dates and festival appearances that keeps its cult following happy.
