Rickie Lee Jones at Evanston SPACE
When she debuted with the single "Chuck E.'s In Love" from her self-titled album back in 1979, Rickie Lee Jones very quickly proved she could put some funky bomp into a pleasant folk-pop song. That deceptively easygoing defiance of categories has defined her work since: The 1997 album Ghostyhead dabbled in the trip-hop sounds of Portishead, of all things, and 2009's Balm In Gilead falls somewhere between her early work and weighty country ballads. From album opener "Wild Girl" on, it seems Jones' voice still has its sly, jazzy way of fluttering around a melody. This also might be the only album ever to boast duets with both the laid-back Ben Harper and the recently deceased country-gothic songwriter Vic Chesnutt.
