Upon first listen, Royal Baths don’t stick out as anything but another band full of would-be time travelers with a boner for the ’60s, toying with echo pedals and other effects to come off as authentic. But as soon as it is time to call bullshit on these desperate garage rockers, they come through with one good track that shines through the rest of the overly underproduced wreckage. “Nikki Don’t,” the best track on the band’s 2010 debut record, Litanies, offsets its dark and serious instrumentation with goofy rephrases, a driving bass line, and a pretty remarkable sense of self-awareness. It’s a little thing, but this one satirical edge saves Royal Baths from a sad, premature, garbage-can death. Here’s hoping the band has more than one savior up its sleeve on the brand-new album Better Luck Next Life.
