With twangy picking, steel guitars, and classic country themes, The Sadies' personal affections have always been plainly obvious: Country music outlaws like Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard, as well as Nashville legends like Tammy Wynette and Roger Miller, are omnipresent in most of their tunes. So it comes as no surprise that the Canadian alt-country quartet felt compelled to produce Country Club, a record that covers some of the basic classics from Wynette ("Till I Get It Right"), Johnny Cash ("I Still Miss Someone"), and company, with fellow alt-countryman John Doe taking lead vocals to complement the band's often fiery rhythm section. Few bands are this committed to their influences; even fewer could legitimately and unironically use a bullwhip during performances.
