Second City 50th Anniversary Festival: SCTV Reunion Performance at Second City (Mainstage)
While Saturday Night Live takes most of the credit for popularizing sketch comedy on American television, Toronto's Second City Television wasn't too far behind, running for six solid seasons and arguably picking up SNL's slack during its identity-less early-'80s era. Premised as a podunk Canadian television station producing local low-budget entertainment, SCTV reliably crafted smart, goofball comedy, like Martin Short's greasy Ed Grimley character (which he would later take to SNL) and Eugene Levy's spot-on Ricardo Montalbán impression. Now, Levy, Short, and a solid chunk of former cast members will reunite with two performances and a panel discussion on Saturday, featuring names like Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis, and Dave Thomas.
