Sloan and Magneta Lane at Lincoln Hall
Canadian power-pop quartet Sloan is undeniably fun, and the band’s 2008 release Parallel Play only bolsters that claim. But then, this is a band that has always dabbled in ’70s AM-radio and harmony-laden arrangements in service of its own kind of unassuming thrill. After 2006’s Never Hear The End Of It, which crammed 30 bright, bursting songs into 76 melody-filled minutes, it seemed doubtful that bassist-singer Chris Murphy and company would steer back to a more conventional-length album. Parallel Play returns to a 13-track format, but it’s just as fun as its epic predecessor—and, if anything, more focused.
