None The Soft Pack and Smith Westerns at Chopin Theatre
Garage-rock quintet The Smith Westerns have quickly transitioned from misfits at Northside College Preparatory High School to opening for bigger, like-minded acts on both local (Alex White) and national levels (Jay Reatard). Even better: They haven’t feigned maturity after their sudden growth. This year’s self-titled debut is a wondrous trudge filtered through lo-fi Phil Spector pastiches: Its juvenile attempts at throwbacks sometimes sound a little too by-the-numbers, but it's a carefree revival of Elephant 6-style goofiness at others. Headliners The Soft Pack, conversely, are an older band whose excitement seems to have peaked before they changed their name from The Muslims. The quartet plays neat and tightly packed fuzzy punk, but isn't exceptionally exciting.
