None Sónar Fest: Oval at Chicago Cultural Center
One of the originators of glitch, electronic music's most self-descriptive subgenre, Markus Popp has been making music as Oval since 1991. In that time, the IDM innovator’s been dead set on exploring sounds culled from the misfiring of everyday technology, like the buggy 4-year-old PC on which he made his new double album, O. It’s that self-restriction that ends up showcasing Popp’s immense talent as a musician rather than as a technological trailblazer, but it’s a tactic that requires tons of time and diligence as well. It’s taken nearly 10 years for Oval to release anything new, but Popp makes up for lost time by loading O with a whopping 70 tracks.
