Sónar Festival: The Slew at Millennium Park (Pritzker Pavilion)
Combine the supernatural sampling powers of Kid Koala and remix artist extraordinaire Dynomite D with the thumping blues-rock of Wolfmother’s former rhythm section (Chris Ross and Myles Heskett) and you get The Slew. The group's debut 100% grew out of Koala and D’s work scoring a Jay Rowlands documentary, and while that film never saw the light of day, the music survives—albeit to mixed results. “It’s All Over” is a mishmash of scribbling turntablism, “Walk This Way”-style guitar riffs, and chitchat about how “The people don’t have the power anymore"—and it's overwrought and cringeworthy. Resembling something straight out of a Guy Ritchie soundtrack, “Robbing Banks (Doin’ Time)” is a equally hokey, but at least it’s fun.
