Athens, Ohio’s Southeast Engine are the little band that could. The band plays country-rock with a purpose, a sort of drive and gallop that keeps its songs in perpetual motion. That same chugging along applies to the band’s work overall now that its members have been together over a decade. Canary, the band’s fifth record, was released earlier this year and garnered strong reviews across the board. It’s no surprise, considering the hauntingly sharp songwriting of frontman Adam Remnant on tracks like “Curse Of Canaanville” and “Adeline Of The Appalachian Mountains,” which focus, along with the rest of the record, on a family living in a small Appalachian town during the Great Depression. It’s compelling stuff, for sure, and shows that if Southeast Engine thinks it can just enough, it could be a really big deal.
