Stay Golden, Mark Rose, and Carbon Tigers at Lincoln Hall
From 1998 through 2007, Spitalfield's career saw the rise and subsequent bloat of punk-derived, melodic emo-rock. The band has always played that music better than most thanks to the strength of its slashing guitars, thoughtful arrangements, and dynamic cohesion, a formula so winning that it's no wonder Spitalfield has been bubbling up with reunion shows this summer (including one earlier in June and another in August at the Beat Kitchen). It also follows that Spitalfield lead singer Mark Rose has been testing the solo waters with a much poppier and subtly blues-tinged approach. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that if boy bands played their own instruments and stopped singing about holding hands, they'd sound something like Rose does on his new, catchy EP, Separate.
