Susan Werner at Evanston SPACE
Jazz-influenced singer Susan Werner has both the aggression of a left-leaning folkie and a set of polished chops that nods to performers such as Carole King and Billie Holiday. She went so far as to try and write a new national anthem in 2005, “My Strange Nation,” bordering on preachy but with a plucky sense of humor. The song typifies much of her recent work, including 2007’s The Gospel Truth, which harnesses familiar gospel-music elements on songs that challenge religious hypocrisy. Werner went slightly more traditional with 2009’s covers disc Classics, although her unusual arrangements—the cello-driven, Vivaldi mash-up of “A Hazy Shade Of Winter,” for example—keep things from getting too staid.
