Talking Pictures Film Festival: Echotone at The Next Theatre

Known as the "Live Music Capital Of The World," Austin has managed to transform that artistic cred into economic growth. But as the new documentary Echotone examines, that success has had an enormous impact on the musicians who helped create it, forcing them to struggle to survive in a city that many of them can no longer afford to live in. Director Nathan Christ's deftly interwoven story of maintaining cultural integrity in the face of encroaching commercialism is a familiar one, but it's fascinatingly told through a free-flowing series of live concert footage and interviews with bands, promoters, club owners, and journalists (including A.V. Club writer and Austin longtime resident Sean O'Neal), all of whom have different ideas about the future of their city, and what roles they'll be allowed to play in it.
