Todd Snider has earned his share of acclaim over his decade-plus in the music scene, but his smart-aleck contrariness--and his tendency to tackle uncomfortable subject matter--has led to less-than-monumental record sales. His 2006 disc, The Devil You Know, features the best storytelling this side of a John Prine record, and finds the oft-overlooked connection between Bob Dylan and Bill Hicks. (The bitingly satiric "You Got Away With It" is the best song written about former President Bush, period.). Live, he's an engaging, hilarious presence, mixing his superb songs with rambling, audience-friendly banter. Following last year's provocatively titled Peace Queer, he's out now ahead of a forthcoming full-length called The Excitement Plan, due in June.
