Type O Negative sets itself apart from the overly serious goth-metal crowd by incorporating dark humor and a sense of melody into its otherwise evil music. Colossal singer Peter Steele is an imposing figure both onstage and on record: His lyrics ought to scare most non-metalheads off, if his 1995 Playgirlpictorial didn’t already. There are signs the formula has grown tired—even the title of Type O Negative’s 2007 record, Dead Again, feels a bit shopworn. But fans who know the drill are content to let Steele once again do his depressing horror-show act, even if others might equate Type O Negative in 2009 with the Friday The 13th series around the time Jason took Manhattan.
