Chicago’s Unicycle Loves You may seem at first to have a gimmicky name, but the quirky nomenclature perfectly matches the group’s unique persona. Oscillating between dreamy pop and rough-edged surf rock, the band has a wide catalog of sounds, described as “lo-fi indie-pop bangers.” Taking influence from the likes of Tapes ’N’ Tapes, Art Brut, and The Strokes, Unicycle Loves You works toward melodic cohesion with a tinge of thrashing devil-may-care attitude. The group’s harmonies are cohesive but always elastic, allowing it to routinely experiment with—and succeed at creating—new sounds. Its 2012 release, Failure, celebrated with this performance, highlights the best qualities of garage rock: dance-inducing, choppy guitar riffs complemented by deeply rooted bass lines.
