Over the past decade or so, Waco Brothers have become a Chicago country-punk institution, releasing album after album of rollicking country on Bloodshot. Although the rise of alt-country in the ’90s inspired a slew of terrible cowpoke wannabes, the Wacos have always played with an irony-free reverence. Purists may sneer, especially considering many of the Wacos aren’t originally from the U.S., but it’s hard to resist the group’s charm. If you can’t catch them live, pick up the band’s live album, Waco Express: Live And Kickin’ At Schubas Tavern for a good introduction.
