The Walkmen have pumped out waves upon waves of big, hooky rock that scrapes at memories of ’60s garage while beating with an anguished contemporary heart. Spacious guitar effects and swirls of organ keep the songs’ intentions nice and murky, but the band has a lot to put on display—as exhibited on 2004’s transcendent Bows + Arrows and 2008’s You & Me, an album with lots of bristling, suggestive atmosphere.
