If you’re the mood for being rocked quietly and unobtrusively, spin the new self-titled record from Yellowhammers, a quintet of Chicago-based country-folk softies. A raucous bunch of porch-loungers, Yellowhammers seem content to pen laid-back anthems about working in factories, catching the “midnight train,” and walking dramatically down lonely streets with flickering streetlights. It's a little depressing, but Yellowhammers is just as rife with upbeat ditties and banjo-laden tracks, including a tribute to Elvis Presley that’s sure to please anyone who still pays respect to the King. Jon Langford, guitarist for influential UK country-punkers Mekons (among numerous others), produces the record and will appear with the band, but his country background contributes far more than his punk persona, allowing Yellowhammers to maintain their “just having a brewsky” chill.
