Growing up in New Orleans, Louisiana, Amelie Gillette (contributor) went to the same creative-arts high school that Harry Connick Jr. and the Marsalis brothers once attended. It was kind of like the school in Fame, but with more jazz, less dancing on tables, and a writing program. Amelie was in the writing program, but she soon developed an appreciation for all the arts (except dance). After graduation, she moved to New York City, where in 2002 she got a BA in Journalism from NYU, and started writing freelance entertainment pieces about bands, television, pop stars (mostly foreign), and comedians. Eventually, The A.V. Club recognized her enormous talent for pithy blurbs about high/low culture and hired her. She lives in Brooklyn, and spends a lot of money on cabs.
