Marc Hawthorne

Around the same time Marc Hawthorne (city editor, San Francisco) was coming to the realization that he would never pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers, his rebellious older brother began to play Depeche Mode and Joy Division records as loud as he could in the adjoining room. To young Marc's surprise, the first time he actually sat down with Music For The Masses, he already knew all the words, a fascination that led to the formation of numerous bands—industrial, pop, goth, rap, joke, grunge, you name it—in high school. Unfortunately, it soon became apparent to Marc that he was the weakest link in all of these groups (later proven by the other members' success in bands like The Postal Service), so he decided to trade making music for writing about it (though he still has his drum set in storage back home, just in case that Chia Band reunion ever comes to fruition). After stints in Santa Barbara, Seattle, and Cleveland, he's settled in quite nicely in San Francisco, where he basks in the diversity and boos loudly at the Giants.
